Reliance Industries Chairman, Mukesh Ambani announced that the new operating system is aimed at developing new affordable smartphones.Google and Jio and coming together to launch a new Android-based operating system which will be used to build affordable smartphones.
Reliance Industries Limited has announced plans to tie up with Google for a new Android-based operating system for an entry-level smartphone for the Indian market.Jio Platforms and Google have entered into a commercial agreement to develop entry-level affordable smartphones with optimizations to the Android operating system and Play Store.
After providing affordable 4G handsets from the jio,, now jio is looking forward to introducing affordable 5G phones as well. Currently jio phones are based on KaiOS, but this software falls between what consumers get in features phones and proper smartphones. To KaiOS, Jio has added special versions of apps like Google and WhatsApp but going forward the company hopes to have a full-fledged Android based OS in its affordable phones.
This software, said Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, would help users move away from feature phones and would help Jio create phones that utilise 4G and 5G something that Jio plans to bring in a year or so better and deliver richer services. The announcement was made at the 43rd Reliance AGM meeting.
“Even though we have sold over 100 million JioPhones, there are many feature phone users who are waiting to upgrade to a conventional smartphone if only they were somehow more affordable. So, we have decided to address this challenge head-onWe believe we can design an entry-level 4G, or even 5G smartphone, for a fraction of its current cost. But, to power such a value engineered smartphone, we also need an equally value-engineered smartphone operating system… and such an operating system must be designed with India in mind. Google and Jio are partnering to build an Android-based smartphone operating system,” said Ambani.
While addressing the Reliance AGM through video conferencing, google CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Jio partnership would help Google reach more users in India, where millions of people continue to use feature phones”.
“Google and Jio Platforms have entered into a commercial agreement to jointly develop an entry-level affordable smartphone with optimizations to the Android operating system and the Play Store. Together we are excited to rethink, from the ground up, how millions of users in India can become owners of smartphones,” Google spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Google has announced that it is investing rupees 33,737 Cr in Jio Platforms. This google’s investment will translate into a 7.73% equity in JIo platform on a fully diluted basis.
